If you’re using Lazy Registration, the strikethrough pattern – showing signup step(s) crossed out – is an excellent way to get the message across. It makes the message blatantly obvious and without ambiguity or complex wording.

At meta level, it’s a good example of one type of pattern (UI design) interacting with another (interaction design). That’s something at the heart of the pattern language concept to me (http://mahemoff.com/paper/language/), hopefully evident in Ajax Patterns (http://ajaxpatterns.org), and the whole reasoning behind patterns as an interdisciplinary bridge.

Josh Porter’s (aka @bokardo) blog is worth reading if you’re interested in this stuff. His new in-progress book – Making Them Care – is all about the signup. http://bokardo.com/archives/coming-soon-make-them-care-my-new-book/
